BERKELEY — Sunday Streets Berkeley, scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 15, has been cancelled, along with its companion events Pet Parade, Salsa Sunday and Vine Street Block Party, due to bad air quality resulting from raging North Bay fires, organizers announced Thursday.
“Sunday Streets Berkeley is a diverse celebration of our community, and we could not in good conscience ask members of our community, especially children, seniors, and other sensitive individuals to risk their health and safety,” Heather Hensley of the North Shattuck Association, one of the organizers, said in a posting on the Sunday Streets Berkeley website on Thursday.
The other organizers are the Downtown Berkeley Association, Walk Oakland Bike Oakland, and Livable Berkeley.
Sunday was supposed to be Berkeley’s sixth celebration of the annual event, now held in several dozen cities in North America. It had called for the closing of a two-mile stretch of Shattuck Avenue, encompassing the Gourmet Ghetto and the heart of the downtown business district, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15.
Hensley, in an email Thursday, said organizers will try to reschedule the event for the spring, perhaps in concert with the opening of the new downtown BART plaza.
