The NJCU Alumni Jazz Band will perform on Friday in Jersey City to remember four jazz icons.

Jazz will fill the air on Jersey City’s waterfront Friday evening.

The NJCU Alumni Jazz Big Band will perform its “100th Birthday Salute to Four Jazz Icons” at J. Owen Grundy Pier. The band will play the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich and Thelonious Monk.

Recently-retired NJCU professor Richard Lowenthal, who began the jazz program in the late-1960s, will serve as the band’s conductor. The band comprises past students and professors, and includes Rich DeRosa, a drummer and recipient of the 2014 NJCU Distinguished Alumni Award, as well as former faculty member Peter McGuiness. Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band member Doug Purviance will also take part in the performance.

The Alumni Jazz Big Band will be joined by world famous trumpet player Jon Faddis and French singer Cyrille Aimee.

Faddis, who was mentored by Gillespie, has been a long-time advocate of the jazz legend’s music. Aimee has won the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival Vocal Competition, the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition, and was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition.
